Brick

What it is

Brick is a physical device that helps you curb your screen time. You can choose which apps or websites you want to block with the Brick app, tap your phone on your Brick, and track the time you spend staying focused.

Why we like it

Adding real, physical friction to unblocking is a smart way to encourage more thoughtful phone use. When you place your Brick somewhere out of reach, it takes real effort to open an addictive app or website, forcing you to think twice before you do. If you find yourself glued to your screen often, Brick may be worth considering.

Brick's transparent pricing is also a plus. As of this writing, you can use Brick without a subscription— just buy the device for $59 and set it up with their free app.

Things to know

  • Brick is HSA and FSA eligible, and has student discounts available.
  • In case you lose your Brick, each device includes five emergency unbricks that you can activate in the app to regain access to your device. If you use up all five, you risk blocking critical functionality on your phone indefinitely.
  • We experienced some bugginess using Brick day-to-day with an iPhone, but we assume this is due to Apple's API limitations.

If you're looking for a new way to limit your screen time, Brick may be for you.
